Benefits Of Apple Cider Vinegar For Your Hair

You may have heard about apple cider vinegar and its benefits for gut and digestive health but there’s something else it can drastically improve -- your hair! Listen up because this product is affordable, and could be helpful for your hair troubles.

What are the benefits?

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is a natural substance made from fermented apple juice that contains many antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. It is slightly acidic and helps to keep the pH levels of your scalp balanced. Because of its antibacterial and anti-fungal properties, it can help treat dandruff, itchy scalp, and product build-up. Celebrity colorist Denis de Souza says, “it helps to strengthen your hair by closing the cuticles and the hair shaft.” This can prevent tangling, breakage, and improve your overall hair health.

Dr. Joshua Zeichner says ACV is “useful in treating dandruff because it helps lower levels of yeast on the skin that promotes inflammation which leads to flaking.” This yeast can also just lead to irritation and itchiness. It’s hard to believe that something this simple can solve such a pesty problem!

How to apply ACV to your hair:

  1. Take 5 parts water to one part ACV in a spray bottle
  2. Spray your scalp with the solution evenly until coated
  3. Work the vinegar into your hair. If you notice burning, add more water onto your scalp.
  4. Let that sit for 5-10 minutes and rinse.
  5. Follow with a light conditioning treatment
  6. Enjoy your healthy, shiny hair!
  7. Repeat once a week

Things to Remember:

If you naturally have very dry hair, this rinse might not be something you want to do frequently. If done too often, the acidity of the ACV can be harsh and stripping. The same thing goes for colored hair! Stylist Jo Blackwell Preston says that an ACV rinse is perfectly safe for color-treated hair, but not all the time. It’s all about moderation!

In our opinion, the ACV rinse is definitely worth trying. You can get a bottle at your local grocery store for under $5, and if you don’t like the results, save it for something else! Try this hair hack and let us know if ACV is your new haircare staple!
