How To Take Care of Beach Hair

Everyone knows the importance of applying sunscreen to your skin during a fun relaxing day at the beach, but you should also consider giving your hair some care as well! Although salt water is known for its healing powers and ability to detox skin, it could potentially be harming your hair. Beachy waves are gorgeous but excessively exposing hair to salt water can be pretty damaging.

Just like your skin, your hair can become dehydrated when evaporation causes a significant loss of moisture. The ocean has a much higher a high salt content than the cells of our skin and nails. Due to osmosis (which you might remember from that biology class you took in high school), the water content in hair is pulled into the ocean because of the higher concentration of salt.

The dehydration and dryness from overexposure to the ocean can lead to hair with rough dry texture, split ends and breakage. Your hair could take longer to dry and become harder to style over time. Thankfully, whether you’re going on vacation to the ocean or you live in a beach town, there are some measures you can take to minimize salt water damage to your hair!

One of the more effective methods to fight salt water damage is by wearing a swim cap to protect your luscious locks. If you wouldn’t be caught dead in a swim cap, be sure to spray some leave-in conditioner in your hair before you hit the beach to help with hydration. Living Proof No Frizz Leave-In Conditioner, John Masters Green Tea & Calendula Leave-In Conditioning Mist, and Aveda Color Care are all great leave-in conditioners to try this summer according to Harper’s Bazaar.

After a day at the beach you should always shampoo and condition ASAP to prevent your hair from becoming dry and brittle. You can also apply a deep conditioning hair mask of your choice to help restore lost moisture. Allure recommends trying these hair masks--- Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen, Grow & Restore Treatment Masque, Fekkai PrX Reparatives Intensive Fortifying Masque, and Shea Moisture Fruit Fusion Coconut Water Weightless Hair Masque.

Make sure to keep in mind your specific hair type and needs when choosing a leave-in conditioner or hair mask. These are just some steps you can take to protect your strands when spending time in the waves. What do you do to prevent hair damage from the ocean?
