Why Your Hair Towel Matters

The Science Behind Nanoweave®

Your hair is most vulnerable right after you wash it.

When hair is wet, its outer cuticle layer lifts and becomes more elastic. That means it stretches, snags, and breaks more easily than dry hair. Most people think carefully about their shampoo, conditioner, and heat tools. Very few think about what happens in the minutes between the shower and the blow dryer.

That is where the towel comes in. And that is where most hair care routines quietly do a lot of damage.

Here is what happens, step by step:

Step 1: Wet hair lifts its cuticle.
The outer protective layer of each strand opens up, making it more porous and more susceptible to mechanical damage from friction.

Step 2: A rough towel creates friction.
Standard terry cloth towels are made of large, looped fibers. Those loops snag wet strands, roughing up the cuticle with every rub and squeeze.

Step 3: Raised cuticle leads to frizz and breakage.
A disrupted cuticle does not lie flat. It scatters light, creates texture, and weakens the strand over time, producing frizz, breakage, and mystery damage most people never trace back to their towel.

Step 4: More drying time means more heat exposure.
An inefficient towel leaves hair wetter for longer. You compensate with more time under the blow dryer. More heat means more stress on strands that are already compromised.

The fix is simpler than you think.
The right towel removes more water faster, with less friction. That is exactly what Nanoweave® was engineered to do.

What is Nanoweave®?

Nanoweave® is VOLO Beauty's proprietary fabric technology, engineered from ultra-fine fibers that are significantly finer than standard microfiber. The result is a surface that lies smooth against wet hair, absorbing moisture quickly and efficiently without the mechanical friction that causes damage.

Not because of a special treatment or coating, but because of the way the fabric itself is made.

This distinction matters. Many fabrics are finished with softening treatments or coatings to improve their feel, but those treatments wash out over time. Nanoweave® performance comes from the fiber structure itself. It does not diminish with washing.

The VOLO team spent one full year developing and engineering Nanoweave®. The research began not with a towel concept but with a deep study of how hair dries and what the healthiest drying process looks like. That work started during the development of the VOLO Go cordless infrared hair dryer, and led directly to a key insight: the towel step, not just the dryer step, was where hair was most often being damaged. VOLO was not the first brand to make a hair towel. The goal was to make the best one.

Cotton vs. Microfiber vs. Nanoweave®

Not all hair towels perform the same way. Here is what happens at the fiber level, and why it shows up in your hair.

Terry Cloth Cotton

  • Large, looped fibers
  • High friction on wet hair
  • Cuticle disruption
  • Frizz and breakage
  • Heavy when saturated
  • Slower drying time
  • More heat exposure needed

Standard Microfiber

  • Finer than cotton
  • Less friction than cotton
  • Some cuticle disruption remains
  • Better than cotton, not optimal
  • Lighter than terry cloth
  • Faster drying than cotton
  • Some heat still needed

Nanoweave®

  • Ultra-fine proprietary fibers
  • Smooth surface, low friction
  • Cuticle stays calmer
  • Less frizz and breakage
  • Lightweight
  • 50% faster drying time*
  • Less heat exposure needed

*Compared to standard terry cloth. Independently tested by Intertek.

Nanoweave® works for all hair types.

Whether your concern is frizz, breakage, drying time, or curl definition, the underlying benefit is the same: less friction and faster moisture removal at the moment your hair is most vulnerable.

Curly Hair: Ideal for curl plopping. Absorbs water without disturbing curl pattern or creating frizz from friction.

Thick Hair: High absorbency means more water removed before styling, significantly cutting blow dry time.

Fine Hair: Lightweight and gentle. No snagging on strands that break most easily when wet.

Color-Treated Hair: Reduced mechanical friction means less stress on chemically processed strands and better color longevity.

Short Hair: The Snug Strap keeps the towel securely in place even on shorter lengths, so it actually stays put.

Heat-Styled Hair: Start drier, use less heat. Faster moisture removal before styling means less blow dryer time overall.

What customers notice first.

The difference people describe most often is immediate: less frizz, less weight, more water removed, and hair that responds differently to styling.

"I wore this hair towel for the first time last night. Once I took it off and saw my hair, I noticed a difference immediately. The VOLO towel absorbed way more water from my hair and I didn't have nearly as much frizz. I definitely plan on purchasing more to replace all of my hair towels."
— Alexis
"My hair is softer, smoother, and stronger than with any other hair towel I've used. Blow-drying is faster and my hair looks great. I haven't done anything differently other than switch to the VOLO Hero Hair Towel."
— Julie D.
"I have short, fine, shoulder-length hair. This towel is perfect for keeping it bundled up while I do my face routine. It's incredibly soft and gentle, lightweight, and comfortable. The strap keeps it well in place and it's the perfect size for me."
— Meg
"I hated struggling to wrap a regular heavy and awkward towel around my hair after washing it. Light, thin, absorbent, and a perfect size for wrapping. Thank you!"
— Myrna V.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my hair get frizzy after using a regular towel?

Standard terry cloth towels are made of large, looped fibers that snag and rough up the hair cuticle when wet. Because hair is most elastic and vulnerable right out of the shower, rubbing it with a heavy towel creates friction that lifts the cuticle, causing frizz, breakage, and what many people call mystery frizz they never connect back to their drying routine.

What is Nanoweave® and how is it different from regular microfiber?

Nanoweave® is VOLO Beauty's proprietary fabric technology, engineered from ultra-fine fibers that are significantly finer than standard microfiber. While regular microfiber is a step up from terry cloth, Nanoweave® produces a smoother surface against the hair cuticle, reducing mechanical friction. It absorbs 10x its own weight in water and has been independently tested by Intertek to reduce hair drying time by 50% compared to standard terry cloth.

Has Nanoweave® been clinically tested?

Yes. The VOLO Hero Hair Towel was independently tested by Intertek, a globally recognized product testing and certification company. Testing confirmed that Nanoweave® reduces hair drying time by 50% compared to standard terry cloth and absorbs 10x its own weight in water.

Is Nanoweave® a coating or chemical treatment?

No. Nanoweave® is not a treatment, coating, or finish applied to the fabric. The performance comes from the way the fibers themselves are engineered at a structural level. That means the absorbency and smoothness do not diminish with washing over time.

Is the VOLO Hero Hair Towel good for curly hair?

Yes. Nanoweave® is ideal for curly hair because it absorbs water quickly without the friction that disrupts curl pattern. Many curly hair customers use the VOLO Hero for plopping, wrapping curls to encourage definition while the towel wicks away moisture gently and without frizz.

Can switching towels actually reduce hair breakage?

Hair breakage from towel drying is caused by mechanical friction, rough fibers snagging and pulling at wet strands. Nanoweave® is engineered to produce a smoother surface against the hair, significantly reducing that friction. Because it also absorbs water faster, you spend less time handling vulnerable wet hair overall.

Where is the VOLO Hero Hair Towel sold?

The VOLO Hero Hair Towel is available at volobeauty.com and at Target, Nordstrom, Bloomingdale's, Bluemercury, Von Maur, and Amazon.
